Lottery Myths, Tested: Lucky Stores and "Due" Games

Every regular has a theory about which tickets win. We ran the popular ones past the actual probability and found that three collapse and one holds up.

The clerk taps the glass and tells you that machine's been cold all week. The guy behind you in line says the store on the corner sold a $50,000 winner in March, so that's where he buys now. Somebody's cousin swears you should never take the first ticket off a fresh roll.

Scratch-off players build theories because the game gives you just enough pattern to be tempting. Some of those theories are harmless. A few of them cost you real money. We track 2,097 games across 40 states, refreshed daily, with today's numbers pulled August 31, 2026. That lets us hold the popular beliefs up to the actual math and see which ones survive.

"This store sells winners"

This is the most widespread belief in the hobby, and it's built on something true. Some stores really do sell more winning tickets than others. The reason is boring. They sell more tickets.

A busy gas station off the interstate moves ten times the volume of a corner market. It will produce roughly ten times as many winners, and it will hang ten times as many of those big novelty checks on the wall. What you see when you walk in is the winners. What you don't see is the mountain of losing tickets that same store sold to get there. Those went in the trash can by the door.

Statisticians call this survivorship bias. You're judging by the evidence that stuck around, not the evidence that vanished. The tickets in any given store come from the same print run, meaning the total number of tickets the state printed for that game. They're shuffled and shipped out in no particular order. The store has no idea what's in the box, and neither does the clerk who told you the machine was cold.

A game is never "due"

Here's the version I hear most. A game has been on sale for months, nobody's hit the big one, so the big one must be coming. Or its mirror image: someone just won, so that game's tapped out for a while.

Both are the gambler's fallacy, the belief that random events keep score. They don't. A scratch-off ticket doesn't know how long it's been sitting in the dispenser, and it can't tell whether the person ahead of you won or lost. Each ticket you buy is a sealed, independent little event.

What confuses people is that scratch-offs aren't purely random the way a coin flip is. The prizes are printed in a fixed quantity from the start, and that part is real. But the tickets get scattered across thousands of retailers statewide, so no single store's recent history tells you anything useful about the box in front of you. "Due" is a feeling, not a fact.

Does buying a whole roll help?

Some players buy an entire roll, on the theory that a roll must contain a guaranteed number of winners. This one is half-right in a way that doesn't help you.

Buying more tickets does smooth out your results. The more you buy, the closer you land to the game's average payback. But that average is the problem. Across every game we track, scratch-offs pay back about 68 cents per dollar. Buy $300 worth of a typical game and you're not beating anything. You're guaranteeing yourself a very reliable trip toward losing about $96. Volume doesn't change the rate. It only makes the rate come true faster.

The rate does move with price, though, and that's worth knowing. Here's the average across everything on sale today.

A $30 ticket returns about 77 cents on the dollar. A $1 ticket returns about 58. That's roughly $23 back on the $30 ticket versus 58 cents on the dollar ticket. It doesn't make the expensive ticket a good investment. It does mean five $1 tickets are a worse deal than one $5 ticket, almost every time.

The myth that's actually true

Now the one that holds up. Remaining-prize data genuinely matters, and it's the only "system" here with math behind it.

States publish how many of each prize are still unclaimed. When the big prizes in a game get claimed but the game stays on sale, the tickets left in circulation are worth measurably less than they were at launch. Overall odds, meaning how often a ticket wins anything at all, barely move, because the small prizes are still there. The expected return quietly collapses. You're buying the same ticket at the same price with less money behind it.

Run that logic in reverse and you find the good games. Today the best-returning ticket we track is Massachusetts' "BILLION DOLLAR EXTRAVAGANZA," a $50 game paying back about 116 cents on the dollar. That's more than a dollar back per dollar in, because the prizes still sitting in the pool outweigh what's left to be sold. Oregon's $20 "50X" is at about 115 cents. Missouri's $10 "100X" is around 111. Those numbers shift as prizes get claimed, which is why we recalculate daily.

Where you buy doesn't matter. When you buy does. The same game can be a good deal at launch and a bad one six months later, and the state's own remaining-prize data will tell you which, if you check before you hand over the money.

Geography matters too, in a way no lucky-store theory can overcome. Massachusetts averages about 76 cents back per dollar across its games. New Mexico averages about 56. That's a 20-cent gap on every dollar, set by state policy and entirely outside your control, but useful to know if you ever buy tickets across a state line.

What to do instead of trusting a hunch

  • Ignore store reputation entirely. Buy wherever's convenient.
  • Skip $1 and $2 games unless you specifically enjoy them, because the payback is the worst on the board.
  • Check remaining prizes before you buy, not after.
  • Don't chase a top prize, the biggest prize in a game, that's already been claimed. Plenty of games stay on shelves after their biggest prize is gone.
